Cats and trains

We're thinking of getting a kitten - I'm wondering what potential damage I should expect on the layout. Anyone have experience with this?

We have LOTS of experience with this, the worst so far has been Phoebe scratching some of the foam core that comprised our 180 degree module, as well as the occasionally derailed train (and the oft chewed sign or person).

If you really want a kitten, both Phoebe (the black and white Manx) and Ms. Prissy (the calico manx) have had kittens, 10 total!

Expect some havoc, but not as much as a goat can wreak.

Well I've had a kitten before but not around a layout. Should I expect chewed through wiring and knocked over trains?

I never had much of a problem with our two chewing anything, but they wreak havoc on anything the workbench. I don't know why it's so fascinating, but even when I had a small layout they would rather wander through the bench and plow stuff onto the floor. They might walk across the layout doing the Catzilla impersonation, but never did anything other than an occasional derailment, but never knocked anything there on the floor. But you can bet if I left a project or parts out they were a gonner.

@ Angry - the goat is awesome!

@Al - yeah the workbench is my biggest fear. At any given point in time there may be 20 tiny parts sitting on it. No more I guess LOL!

I would recommend having one of those snap top organizers to put parts in, as well as something to put projects in while being worked on.

I used to have a cat that chewed wires on my old HO layout, until she bit through the AC lines for the turnout and got the wires stuck between her teeth.

Did you ever get that kitten, and if so, where are the pictures?

Me? Yes there are two now. Not so much kittens anymore. I don't allow them in the room with the layout - they're too destructive.
