What is the recommended height for TT catenary. The distance from railhead to conductor wire?

If you are modelling European, use the values recommended by NEM 202:
  • min working height from railhead: 44 mm
  • max working height from railhead: 54 mm
  • min zig-zag width, centred with the track: 7.5 mm
  • max zig-zag width, centred with the track: 13.5 mm
I am not totally familiar with the North American catenary geometry, but it seems, unsurprisingly, higher than the European. Compare the photos below of the same Siemens EuroSprinter loco on the NEC and on a random line in Germany.

There is also a Data Sheet from the NMRA for the NA prototype. https://www.nmra.org/sites/default/files/d6h.pdf
Lok-n-Roll.de - we are shipping worldwide

Hi:
I don't want to steal the thread, but want you to know I have a box full of catenary parts I bought some years ago and may never use. I believe it is all new old stock, mostly still in packages. Please let me know if interested, and I can do an inventory as to what I actually have.

Dennis,
What brand are your catenary parts and pieces. I run Rokal and I believe their catenary was made by Sommerfeldt. If that is what you have I am interested for sure!

I have to correct my earlier post. I rushed to submit it before checkin how correct it is

  • max working height from railhead: 54 mm
  • working width of collector on the pantograph => max zig-zag width, centred with the track: 7.5 mm
  • total pantograph width: 13.5 mm

A side note: On the prototype the height of the contact wire from the top of rail changes. It is lower in tunnels and under overpasses and is higher along passenger platforms and at level crossings.
