California TTer

Postby Bernd » Wed Aug 23, 2017 6:11 pm

I was doing a bit of research on resin casting and came across the FinescaleRR forum. There is a four page thread on resin casting, quite informative. What caught my eye was on page 3 second post from the bottom up. A modeler by the name of Donnell posted on trying to cast a resin wide vision caboose in TT. Anybody out there know of this modeler and his project? I know it was seven years ago.

Hi Bernd!
I think that's Donnell Wells, who goes by SD80mac here (he runs the Atlas Rescue Forum too in his spare time!).
He stops in here regularly, maybe he can answer if the caboose got off the ground?

There was another Wide-Vision effort in 2005:
TT-Scale WideVision May2005.jpg
NATT T-304 Wide Vision
This was from the slightly erratic Shaun T. in Alberta (CA the Country, not the State!)
...and only reached first generation prototype stage.

One might be tempted to ask how I know...

I thought that handle looked familiar, SD80mac. Ok that explains that part. Thanks.

Thanks Richard. Mystery solved. Not that I'm looking for a wide vision caboose. Doesn't fit my era. Still need to work on my brass caboose I start ages ago. To many projects sitting on the stove. :wtf:

Not sure... I'm not convinced they were done from the same CAD...

You'all should take a look at this article by Dennis Brown that appeared in the Nov. 2001 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman (out of print). I believe you can still find a few copies from Carstens successor (if any) or give Amazon/Ebay a run. Whatever the price for this issue--it's well worth it if you are serious about north American TT. The reefer shown on the magazine cover is the product of a single shell two part mold resin casting process. The article is well-written with plenty of very good color photos of the process used to make these Santa Fe reefers.

I have a complete selection of RMC starting from 1961. In that time period there have been many articles in RMC about resin casting. If anybody is interested in these articles I can make PDF file for your personal use.
