I use N Scale Woodland Scenics which is very small, but I think it looks good, as most (generally speaking) model railroad models and supplies are oversized.

I've used HO ballast before just because you can tell it's ballast from a distance as opposed to just a solid mass. However, that's not very realistic so I'll be using N scale going forward.
