Automatic DCC coupler (Kadee)

Automatic DCC coupler (Kadee for SW1200)

Postby CN-TT » Fri May 09, 2014 5:04 pm

Hi,

here is the new version of the Kadee coupler for my SW1200. It's still in experimental state. I used a micro pager motor mounted undeneath the coupler. I'm quite confident that this will do for the loco.

Do you want to control the micro pager motor directly via decoder?
What about the maximum ampere at the decoder outputs?

It is a good idea. At the SW1200 it could interfere with the frame underneath.

The motor will be connected to a decoder with coupler functions. The stalled motor draws approx. 90mA at 3volts. This is not a problem for most of these decoders. I have to reduce the voltage to 3 Volt with 12 diodes in a row. That works pretty good in my Tillig T334. resources/image/7428 automatic-dcc-coupler-pics-1-5-t2170.html
Unfortunately, I had to remove parts of the frame.

DONE!!!
My SW1200 is now equipped with 2 independent DCC-controlled couplers. I installed 2 "tic tac" sized pager motors underneath the 714 Kadee coupler. I made a small bracket to fix the coupler and motor combination to the frame. The voltage is reduce to 3.5volt with 12 diodes in a row.

Very very cool! Now, figure out how to sell it as a module and I'll buy it!!!!

Very cool to see this work in TT. I did a similar thing in HO scale but I'm sure its possible to bring this down to 1:120 - at least I use the same actuator as CN-TT, only the mechanism is slightly different:

It's already in my shop: http://precimodels.com/en/

@roffez:
This could be easily used for TT! I had exactly the same idea for my SW1200 but my current version worked better for me.

Rolf, do you plan on doing a TT size version?

I find your solution really elegant, no thread! But I doubt it will work in HO because I suspect the long lever requires too much torque to open the knuckle. On the other hand, a long lever makes it easier for the coupler's spring to retract the motor back in the neutral position. Finding the right balance between both requirements was the biggest challenge until I found the optimal diameter for the reel...

Not specifically, but I think the HO version is small enough for TT. The motor, including the reel, is 12mm x 4mm (dia) and should fit under most TT stuff.
