Athearn TT-scale coupler pockets...

Athearn TT-scale coupler pockets...

In a heavily encrypted message, hidden amongst the Athearn August 2016 New product Announcements...
http://www.athearn.com/newsletter/082616/10_ATH_Parts_082616.pdf
is a stealth announcement of TT-scale coupler pockets !!!

Athearn 16788 Coupler Pocket
By surreptitiously announcing them as 'N-scale'... I'm sure they are only trying to avoid a tsunami of orders from the TT-Scale community...

There are hundreds of '37AAR and Fowler box cars waiting for these...

oooooo, cool! Are they better (by whatever criteria) for we TTers than MTL 1015s?

I'd like to know if there's an advantage as well. On other forums the term "McJunky" frequently appears, it seems like they're rated below KD's and Sargents, but I don't have any experience with them.

NB: These are just the draft gear box... aka 'coupler pockets'...

It will be interesting to see if current N-scale couplers besides Athearn McHenry will fit well;
MTL, Bachmann etc... Kadee's HOn3 714 couplers come with the pocket.

I use the Mc Henry MCH 5025 couplers on my TT stuff. They are a small knuckle type similar to a common HO scale Kadee coupler but much smaller. The N version seems better suited to TT to me. I mount them in MTL boxes by trimming the box a bit but I don't use magnetic uncoupling so don't mind having to center the couplers with a skewer when coupling. I like that they come assembled and are rugged with all the working parts out in the open, and just a knuckle spring to worry about. I think some of the couplers show up in my photos in the gallery, I installed them on my MTB switches and some recent rolling stock....DaveB
