SP 9010 (For MacG!)

I just read on another forum that the KM4000 ran on it's own power on Ocober19-
Looks like it's getting very close!

Nice pull! The first start of the Maybach motor since 1968 was on February 14th, 2017.

Great to see the progress made on this unique locomotive. I saw a few in actual service when I was a teenager living in Pleasanton, CA. in the early 1960's. I know a guy who is a volunteer at the Brightside (Niles line) museum yard. He told me not too long ago that #9010 had been SP's first foray into diesel-hydraulic high-horsepower (4000hp) motive power.
#9010 runs on one engine (prime mover) only as the other on-board engine was for all intents and purposes permanently "seized" and not salvageable when received by the museum. The inside joke is that despite the loss of an engine #9010 is still the most powerful locomotive on the property.

SP 9010 (Hood Unit) was one of the second series. Before, in 1961, there were #9000 to #9002 the first diesel-hydraulic locomotives, the Cab Units. The D & RGW also bought three of these units. But they sold it to SP in 1964. A Maybach MD870 engine produces 2000 hp.

1969 was SP 9113, formerly the #9010, converted to the camera car. The first/front engine was replaced by a generator for the camera equipment. The original nose was also removed and a new was built as a housing for the camera.

The epitome of industrial archaeology! And only 14 miles from where I live...
Back in 2014... I was at the Niles canyon Railway when they unveiled SP 9010 with her re-constructed front-end (without the camera room) and with a fresh 'Bloody Nose' paint job.
