2019 Nanaimo Spring Meet

2019 Nanaimo Spring Meet

The Nanaimo Spring meet is always a nice small show.
Getting to it with a layout is difficult because they don't get the hall until the Sunday morning of the show and the first ferry doesn't get you there until 8:45 AM. Without coming over the night before, that doesn't leave much time to setup a layout so I have never seriously tried to get a display there.
However this year events have aligned that require me to take my wife to the show Sunday morning, thus I am taking the GuiTTar layout there to show.

It's 11:30 PM and we are home from the Nanaimo Show. It was a good show if a bit of a bittersweet event. The crew that has been running the event forever, has stepped down. They ended on a high note as the show that usually draws from 800-900 people, drew over 1300 people. A very good show. It looks like there is a new crew interested in running the show.

The day started at o'dark stupid as we got up way too early in the morning to catch a 6:15 AM ferry, except that it was Daylight Savings time so it was o'dark Really stupid in the morning. A group of us gathered in the ferry cafeteria for a hearty morning breakfast and copious amounts of whatever we needed to drink to wake up. They ferry arrived on time (7:55 AM) and after a short drive we were at the display hall just after 8 AM.

Setup was not too rushed as the show did not open until 10 AM.

You will notice two cans of nutrient cola on the table. I drank a lot of that to keep awake. Things were a bit touch and go around 11 AM but an early lunch fixed that.

After the layout warmed up, it ran well.
I had a good selection of equipment that I rotated through the layout.

As usual it drew many comments from young and old.
There were many comments on how good it looked. Bjoern is to be congratulated on coming up with the concept, and the excellent work he did building the GuiTTar layout.
Eventually the show drew to a close at 4 PM and it was time to pack up. After I was loaded, I helped pack the store.
As the ferries are still running on their winter schedule, every 2+ hours instead of hourly, we missed the 5:55 PM ferry (it was full when we arrived at the terminal in time to catch it) and caught the 8:45 PM ferry which left late.
It made for a long but enjoyable day.

We took my wifes' car over as my van has developed terminal issues. Nothing that several times the value of the vehicle can't fix! Newer wheels are in my near future.

Going to crash on Monday and do some vehicle shopping.
Now to get ready for Western Rails in two weeks.

The organiser of the Victoria show was at this event and asked if we would be coming back this year. Most likely yes.
