I would be open to taking a bunch of modules from San Francisco to Kansas City.

Trailer? Harbor Freight just stopped selling trailers, but they expect to be updating them soon.

We are actually looking for a small enclosed trailer ourselves for the transport of modules and such as well.

I'll probably get a used pickup tonneau cover, 8 foot long - and make some waterproof sides.

This will be a temporary shell for my trailer.

I'll want to fold up the trailer and store everything in a compact space.

After a lot of pondering I definitely made up my mind: I will not go to the NTS-18. There is just no way I can justify the expense, monetary and otherwise.

I will focus instead on the commitments I made for the local shows and will plan well in advance the trip to NTS-19 in Salt Lake City.

No offense intended, but have you tried pricing out a small trailer rental? It may be an easier option for you.

Although an application form for vendors has been available, I was waiting for the application form to appear on the show web site. But tonight I happened to scroll completely to the bottom of one of the pages and saw a link to application package for modular displays. (as 'More Information' http://www.kc2018.org/trainshow/trainshow.html )

I can't say more, because perhaps I won't be able to do the show myself - and I don't want to be an example of talk without action.

Fiddling my slide rule came up with the same answer... KC is 1800 miles.

SF Bay Area to Salt lake City in 2019 is a do-able (done it!) 750 miles... 11 hours.
We do lose an hour going sideways (Mountain Time Zone...)

I might bring my wife to SLC and do a side trip up to Montana (family roots...)
Would need to drive through Yellowstone NP...

210 bucks plus 100 bucks for insurance. Might be my best option?

It might be, depending on a number of factors. If memory serves, the camper shell we had on my old Ford Ranger was about $300 by itself.
