Having two engines with the same number on the layout would be wrong anyway. The only problem can be with the B units. Some railroads used A unit's number with "B" added to it.

Operator discipline will be required to NOT run two identically numbered engines on the TT-Tracks at the same time...

With this caveat, I think using the actual engine number for the DCC address is by far the best idea... as this is the only method that does NOT require a lookup each time you want to control a specific engine.

It also means that in most cases... there is no need to re-program anyone's engines just for TT-Tracks events...

We can as long as someone would be willing to manage it. I like jp's suggestion of a google doc. Requires almost zero supervision and anyone can edit at any time. But it's up to you guys ultimately - if it needs to be here, it can be here. Also someone above suggested that there is a new doc for every show. I think if we go the google doc route, that's not needed since the doc can be updated on the go.

That makes sense. But I program mine using a specific pattern. But I'd be ok with changing addresses as needed.

I don't know why people want to complicate a simple thing.

I went through this in the HO Modular club i helped start.
We started with a written roster of locomotives on the layout. You were supposed to check it Before putting a locomotive on the layout. When this started failing I introduced a new system. It took two tries but it was finally adopted.

We had a magnetic board.
On this board were business card sized magnetic cards for every locomotive on the layout.
You checked the board before putting a locomotive on the layout.
If the address was free you put your locomotive card on the board BEFORE you put the model on the layout.
When you were finished and had removed your locomotive from the layout, you then removed the card from the board.
If the address you wanted to use was in use, you had a few options:
- wait for the address to come free,
- negotiate with the current user of the address to free that address or
- pick another locomotive.

It worked and still works well.
The cards were large enough to see at a distance. They could be plain white or coloured to match the basic locomotive paint scheme.

The sample here shows the owners name, the road number, the railroad and locomotive type and in indistinct print on the right side, the decoder type.
Generic Loco Label.jpg
This is a generic card. Just fill in the blanks.

I colour printed these on cardstock and stuck a business card magnet to the back.
The locomotive card is kept with the model.
Blank spares were on hand for new models that did not have a proper card yet.

If we wanted to do this I would replace the inside fascia of the staging yard ladder with painted sheet metal and put the locomotive cards there. There should be enough space for the half dozen or so active locomotives we usually have on the layout.

This is another way to organize this. We only have to make sure everybody brings some kind of paperwork that helps making it easier at a show.
You gotta do much more than believe if you really wanna change things!

I like this method. It's simple and doesn't require a whole bunch of planning beforehand.
