Southern Pacific (SP) Drop Bottom Gondola (TT of course!)

Hello all,

I am almost finished hand tooling a TT scale early SP drop bottom gondola master for a project that I am working on.

SP gondola_01.jpg

The prototype is the early G-50-9 or G-50-10 series built from about 1923-1927:
Reporting marks Series
Arizona Eastern (AE) 4000-4025
Pacific Electric (PE) 5700-6099; 20000-20599
Texas & New Orleans (T&NO) 42250-42449
Southern Pacific (SP) 46155-47079; 91400-92399

More than 3150 car numbers plus 1500 more G-50-11 and G-50-12 series cars. And all the AE and PE cars were numbered into the SP series and then renumbered again in 1955.

With minor additions you could get away with a G-50-11 or 12 series as well. This constituted a major portion of the SP drop bottom gondola fleet through the steam era. In the US, most western RRs used drop bottom gondolas rather than open hoppers for transporting similar mine and bulk commodities.

I plan to cast the car body in resin with a pewter underframe and details. Gotta love those Archer rivets!

Not sure how much interest there might be for this car, but I am willing to make some extras once I work out the cost and what would be included in a kit.

Let me know what you think!

Best regards,
Michael Livingston

Very nice model. If you offer it for sale, I'll buy 2 cars.

A few questions about the prototype: please look here - is'n it the same type of wagon? (article in Russian):

It seems to me they look very similar to your model....
Am I right?
If yes, this model can also be used as Russian wagon. These wagons were exported from USA and Canada to Russia in 1915-1917, during the WWI, and later, during the Civil War in Russia, some of them were used for armored trains building.
In that case you can sell some of these models in Russia too... ;)

..Or is it another type of car?

Here is basic roster information... from Lee Gatreaux's SP freight car site:

The definitive source is Tony Thompson's Southern Pacific Freight Cars Vol 1

All of Chapter 5 (p91 - p105) is devoted to these cars.

Arseny

It definitely seems to be the same TYPE of car... what we would call a "GS" or Gondola - Side-dump...
The Russian ones seem to be a decade earlier version...

It all depends how close is "close enough"!

As many railroads had drop bottom gondolas this could be a good stand in model. I'll take one or two pair.

I'd definitely be up for at least one depending on price... probably two or three (sugar beets yay!)
